General Vs. Specific

Photo Site

In order to find the main idea of a passage, it is useful to teach our brain to identify words that are GENERAL in nature vs. words that are SPECIFIC.

GENERAL would imply a word that one can give examples of, or group other words under it.    SPECIFIC would mean that it is one of a kind - or rare - like our feline above.
For example:

The word LIQUID would be general (there are many types of liquids).   The word LEMONADE, on the contrary, would be SPECIFIC (usually one type).

Let's try it.   If you had to guess, what word would be categorized as GENERAL and which one as SPECIFIC?

      ANIMAL

           CAT

      VEGETABLE

ONION

ANGER

EMOTION
